Bus accident in Sri Lanka kills 22 Buddhists; rescue efforts ongoing

Bus accident in Sri Lanka, 22 Buddhists dead, rescue and relief operation intensified

Colombo, May 12 (H.S.): At least 22 Buddhists died in a bus accident in Sri Lanka yesterday morning near Ramboda in Gardiella. The government bus, operating from Kataragama to Kurunegala, collided with a rock and plunged 100 feet into a ravine. Over 30 passengers were injured, with many in serious condition, and hospitals in Kotmale, Gampola, Nawalapitiya, and Nuwara Eliya are treating them. The police reported 60-70 passengers were on board, including 16 men and six women among the deceased.

Rescue operations continue for those trapped, and two Bell 412 helicopters are on standby for emergency evacuations. The government will compensate the families of victims with 1 million rupees, as confirmed by Transport Deputy Minister Dr. Prasanna Gunasekera. Local police are investigating the incident.
