Delhi Assembly will be the first assembly in the country to be powered by solar energy: Vijender Gupta

On Monday, Deputy Governor Vinay Kumar Saxena laid the foundation stone for a 500-kilowatt solar power plant in the Delhi Legislative Assembly complex.

New Delhi, May 12 (H.S.): Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor Vinay Kumar Saxena inaugurated a 500-kilowatt solar power plant at the Delhi Assembly, underscoring the government’s commitment to environmental protection and energy conservation. He highlighted the potential for solar installations in unused spaces across the city. Key figures at the event included Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta, Deputy Speaker Mohan Singh Bisht, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Public Works Minister Pravesh Sahib Singh Verma, and Education Minister Ashish Sood.

Gupta declared the assembly the first in India to be powered by solar energy, fulfilling Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to fully illuminate the assembly with solar power. This endeavor, inspired by the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, marks a significant step toward environmental sustainability and is expected to dramatically reduce electricity costs, potentially saving around 17.5 million rupees annually, which can be redirected to other development initiatives. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta expressed the government’s commitment to expanding solar energy across Delhi, advocating for every residential and government building to adopt solar solutions for self-reliant electricity.

The Chief Minister of Delhi emphasized the growing demand for electricity, which currently exceeds eight thousand megawatts and could rise to nine thousand megawatts during peak heat. In response, he announced a project inspired by Prime Minister Modi’s PM Surya Ghar Solar Energy Scheme, aimed at promoting green energy. Citizens can receive subsidies up to ₹78,000 for adopting solar energy, marking a significant commitment to clean and sustainable energy for Delhi. This initiative not only symbolizes clean energy but is also expected to save millions in energy costs monthly. The Delhi government is actively encouraging the installation of solar panels in government buildings and residential complexes to build a self-reliant capital. Ministers Parvesh Sahib Singh and Ashish Sood voiced their support for the scheme, hoping it will inspire citizens to embrace solar energy and promote the vision of a ‘Clean Delhi, Green Delhi.’ Lastly, Assembly Vice President Mohan Singh Bisht reiterated the dedication of public representatives to welfare, stating that a solar-powered assembly represents a vital step toward sustainable governance in the region.
