Delhi Court grants bail to nine leaders of the Trinamool Congress

New Delhi, May 13 (H.S.): The Rouse Avenue Court in Delhi has granted bail to nine leaders of the Trinamool Congress in connection with a case related to a protest held in front of the Election Commission’s office in Delhi in April 2024. Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Neha Mittal issued an order granting bail to all the Trinamool Congress leaders on a personal bond of ten thousand rupees each. The next hearing of the case will take place on May 21.

On May 8, the court had granted exemption from appearance to the nine leaders of the Trinamool Congress. Today, Trinamool Congress MPs Derek O’Brien, Mohammad Nadeemul Haq, Dola Sen, Saket Gokhale, Sagarika Ghosh, Arpita Ghosh, Shantanu Sen, Abir Ranjan Biswas, and Sudip Raha appeared before the court. The court granted bail to these nine leaders today. In this matter, Trinamool leader Vivek Gupta appeared in court via video conferencing. The court had granted bail to Vivek Gupta on April 30.

The court took cognizance of the charge sheet issued by Delhi Police and summoned ten leaders of the Trinamool Congress on April 21. The court took cognizance against these leaders under sections 188, 145, and 34 of the Indian Penal Code. On April 8, 2024, around 4 PM, Trinamool Congress leaders carried out a protest with banners and placards. According to Delhi Police, these leaders conducted the protest without any permission, thus violating section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code. According to the charge sheet by Delhi Police, these leaders continued to protest despite receiving warnings. An FIR was subsequently filed.

This protest by Trinamool leaders demanded the removal of the heads of the CBI, ED, NIA, and Income Tax Department. The leaders of the Trinamool Congress claimed that all four agencies were working under the pressure of the ruling BJP during the 2024 general elections. Before the protest on April 8, 2024, Trinamool Congress leaders submitted a memorandum regarding their demands to all the commissioners of the Election Commission. Following this, the Trinamool leaders began a sit-in in front of the Election Commission, after which they were arrested by Delhi Police.
