New Delhi, May 20 (H.S.): In the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, Sunrisers Hyderabad defeated Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) by six wickets on Monday. In this match, LSG’s spinner Digvesh Rathi clashed with Hyderabad batsman Abhishek Sharma. He has now been suspended for one match due to violating the IPL Code of Conduct. This means that Digvesh Rathi will not be able to play in the match against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad on May 22. Additionally, he has been fined 50 percent of his match fee.
In a statement released by the IPL, it was stated that bowler Digvesh Rathi of Lucknow Super Giants was fined 50 percent of his match fee for violating the IPL Code of Conduct during the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Monday.
The statement further explained that this was Digvesh Rathi’s third Level 1 offense under Article 2.5 this season, and as a result, he has incurred two demerit points. Previously, he had earned three demerit points – one for an offense against Punjab Kings on April 1 and two for an offense against Mumbai Indians on April 4. As he now has five demerit points this season, he has been suspended for one match.
This incident occurred in the eighth over of SRH’s innings, when Abhishek Sharma was in tremendous form and had scored 59 runs off just 19 balls. The score for Sunrisers was 99/1, and the team was firmly moving toward the target. In this situation, LSG captain Rishabh Pant handed the ball to Digvesh Rathi for a breakthrough, and Rathi delivered as expected when Abhishek fell to a catch at extra cover. What happened next tarnished the dignity of this crucial moment. As Abhishek began to leave the field, Rathi stared at him aggressively while performing a notebook celebration. This infuriated Abhishek, and he turned back towards Rathi. Some heated words were exchanged between them, after which the umpire and LSG players intervened to calm the situation.
Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Abhishek Sharma was also fined for his reaction. The statement mentioned that Abhishek Sharma was fined 25 percent of his match fee for violating the IPL Code of Conduct during the match. This was his first Level 1 offense under Article 2.6 this season, resulting in one demerit point being awarded to him.
