New Delhi, May 13 (HS): India has expressed deep concern over the diminishing freedoms for democratic processes and political parties in Bangladesh. In response to the ban imposed on the Awami League, led by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, India has emphasized the need for fair and inclusive elections to be held promptly in the neighboring country.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated at the weekly press conference today that the ban on the Awami League without proper process is a cause for concern. As a democracy, India is naturally worried about the violation of democratic freedoms and the shrinking political space. We firmly support the immediate conduct of fair and inclusive elections in Bangladesh.
The interim government of Bangladesh, led by Muhammad Yunus, has officially banned the Awami League, the country’s oldest party that was previously led by ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
