India, EU reaffirms to finalize ambitious FTA by end of 2025

India and EU Reaffirms Commitment to Conclude Ambitious FTA by the End of 2025, Deepen Strategic Trade Ties

Delhi, 2 May (H.S.): Piyush Goyal, India’s Minister of Commerce & Industry, and Maroš Šefčovič, European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, engaged in a substantive dialogue aimed at tackling global trade challenges and reaffirming their commitment to complete the India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) by the end of 2025. This commitment follows directions from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during the historic visit of the EU College of Commissioners to New Delhi in February 2025.

The discussions highlighted the strategic importance of establishing a balanced and fair trade partnership that fosters economic resilience and inclusive growth. Both sides acknowledged the progress across various negotiation tracks and the need to maintain momentum through regular monthly meetings and virtual engagement. India underscored the significance of addressing non-tariff barriers (NTBs) along with tariff discussions, aiming for regulatory frameworks that are inclusive and trade-friendly.

The FTA aims to facilitate digital transition, enhance supply chain resilience, and transform the India-EU strategic partnership by improving market access, regulatory cooperation, and fostering innovation. Recognizing the importance of investment and people-to-people mobility, the dialogue reflects India’s vision of becoming a global partner, promoting diversified production networks, and supporting fair trade as it pursues multiple free trade agreements.
