Gaza Strip, May 20 (HS): In the past week, the Israeli army has intensified its operations against Hamas, targeting over 670 sites, leading to at least 136 fatalities in the last 24 hours alone. Health officials report a total of more than 400 deaths and over 1,000 injuries from Thursday to Monday, with over 53,000 lives lost in Gaza since the conflict began on October 7, 2023. Amidst the ongoing strikes, the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office has permitted limited food supplies into Gaza to alleviate potential famine, though this move poses risks to their military campaign. Prime Minister Netanyahu cautioned that maintaining the 11-week blockade could jeopardize support from key allies like the United States.
In response to Israel’s military actions, the leaders of the UK, France, and Canada have called for a cessation of hostilities and unrestricted humanitarian aid access. They warned of possible actions, including targeted sanctions, if Israel fails to comply. Netanyahu accused these leaders of inadvertently aiding Hamas and supporting its attacks on Israel. Additionally, foreign ministers from 23 nations, including major European powers, along with EU representatives, have urged Israel to ensure fair humanitarian operations and the independent functioning of international organizations in Gaza.
