Italian Open 2025: Jannik Sinner Makes a Brilliant Comeback After 3-month Doping Ban

The world's number 1 tennis player, Jannik Sinner.

Rome, May 13 (H.S.): World number 1 tennis player Jannik Sinner has won his second consecutive match after returning from a doping ban at the Italian Open 2025. In a match played on Monday, he defeated Dutch qualifier Jesper de Jong 6-4, 6-2 to secure a spot in the last 16. This is his first tournament in front of a home crowd, and the fans’ enthusiasm was at its peak.

At the beginning of the match, Sinner took a 4-1 lead, but due to some incorrect drop shots, a double fault, and other errors, de Jong managed to level the score at 4-4. However, Sinner regained complete control of the match with his powerful groundstrokes and fast serves.

With this victory, Sinner’s winning streak has now reached 23 matches, which has been ongoing since October 2024. This Italian Open is his first tournament after winning the Grand Slam title at the Australian Open 2025.

In February, Sinner had to endure a three-month ban under an agreement with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). This decision was controversial due to its timing, as it was such that he did not miss any Grand Slam events and could return directly for his home tournament.

At the Foro Italico Stadium in Rome, fans cheered for Jannik Sinner as he triumphed over Mariano Navone. In the next round, he’ll face Argentina’s 17th seed, Francisco Cerúndolo, a semifinalist at the Madrid Open. During the match, De Jong injured his wrist while falling but continued after treatment, with Sinner showing sportsmanship by checking on him. In men’s matches, seventh-seeded Alex De Minaur defeated Hugo Dellien amidst two interruptions—one due to a spectator’s illness and another for an Air Force flyover.

In women’s play, Coco Gauff convincingly beat Emma Raducanu 6-1, 6-2, while Peyton Stearns edged Naomi Osaka in three sets. Jasmine Paolini advanced by defeating former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko. The Italian Open serves as a vital lead-up to the French Open, starting May 25.
