Kolkata, 3 May (H.S.): In a significant development for commuters, the Kolkata Metro Rail authorities announced on Saturday that services on the Joka–Majerhat route will be enhanced starting May 5. The number of daily train services on this corridor will be increased to 40, offering greater frequency and convenience for passengers.

Officials stated that until now, only 18 metro services were being operated daily between Joka and Majerhat, with an interval of around 50 minutes between trains. From Monday onward, the frequency will improve substantially, with trains running at intervals of just 22 minutes.

“This upgrade is expected to provide much-needed relief to commuters, reducing waiting times and improving overall travel efficiency,” a senior metro official said.

The Purple Line of Kolkata Metro currently operates between Joka and Majerhat. Work is underway to extend the route from Majerhat to Esplanade, which will make the line a crucial part of the city’s metro network by connecting it with the existing Blue Line and Green Line at Esplanade.

At present, metro services on the Purple Line remain suspended on Saturdays and Sundays. However, with the new changes effective from Monday, commuters can expect better accessibility and more reliable service on weekdays.

The extension and enhancement of services are part of a broader strategy to strengthen Kolkata’s metro infrastructure and ensure smoother connectivity across key areas of the city. Passengers and local residents have welcomed the announcement, anticipating a significant improvement in their daily commute.
