LSG captain Rishabh Pant noted gaps difficult to fill after IPL 2025 elimination

Lucknow, May 20 (H.S.): The journey of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) officially came to an end in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 on Monday when Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) defeated them, knocking them out of the playoff race. After the match, captain Rishabh Pant openly discussed the team’s performance and explained how the absence of injured players significantly harmed the team.

Pant said, This hasn’t been our best season. We anticipated that there would be many gaps due to injuries even before the tournament began. We thought we wouldn’t talk about it, but it became difficult to fill those gaps.

The fast bowling department was particularly affected for LSG. Mohammed Siraj was ruled out for the entire season, while pacer Mayank Yadav, who the team relied on heavily, was injured for the majority of the time. Mayank’s return did not last long, and he was seen struggling with a back injury again. Additionally, Avesh Khan and Akash Deep also dealt with fitness issues and could only join the team midway through the season.

Rishabh Pant further added, If the bowling attack we had planned at the auction was in play, perhaps the story would have been different. But that’s cricket; sometimes things go in your favor, sometimes they don’t. We should focus on the positives that can help us move forward.

The batting of LSG did show promise this season. Thanks to half-centuries from Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram, the team scored 205 runs; however, according to Pant, this score was at least 10 runs short. SRH achieved this target with 10 balls to spare.

Nevertheless, there were some positive aspects for LSG. Young leg-spinner Dighvish Rathi had an impressive debut season. The 25-year-old bowler took 14 wickets in 12 matches with an economy of 8.08. On Monday, he also took 2 wickets and was the most effective bowler.

Pant said, The way Rathi bowled was very pleasing to see. He was one of the biggest positives for us this season.

Explaining the difference between the two halves of the season, Pant mentioned, In the beginning, we managed things well, players were performing strongly, but as the tournament progressed, it became difficult to maintain momentum against teams that were performing well.

Even though LSG has been eliminated from the playoff race, some individual performances and the return of players will certainly provide hope for the team’s future.
