Kolkata, 12 May (H.S.) -West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has personally spoken to the family of Border Security Force (BSF) jawan Purnam Kumar Sahu, who is currently in Pakistani custody, assuring them that every possible effort is being made for his safe return.
On Sunday evening, the Chief Minister reached out via phone to Sahu’s wife, Rajni Sahu, who resides in Rishra, Hooghly district. Speaking to the media on Monday, Rajni said that she had earlier expressed her desire to meet the Chief Minister in hopes of securing her husband’s early release. Responding to her plea, Mamata Banerjee called her directly to offer support and assurance.
“Madam enquired about my health and even assured medical assistance for my elderly in-laws if required,” said Rajni, expressing hope and gratitude for the Chief Minister’s intervention.
Purnam Kumar Sahu, 40, was posted in the Ferozepur sector of Punjab when he reportedly crossed the international border by mistake on April 23 and was subsequently detained by Pakistan Rangers.
Rajni added that she had also reached out to BSF officials but has not received any fresh updates so far. She expressed hope that her husband could be repatriated in exchange for the Pakistani Ranger apprehended in Rajasthan on May 3.
In a proactive step, the West Bengal government has entrusted senior Trinamool Congress leader and MP Kalyan Banerjee with monitoring the case. Banerjee reportedly contacted the Director General of BSF on Saturday evening to discuss steps for Sahu’s release.
This incident comes at a time when India and Pakistan have agreed to cease all military hostilities across land, air, and sea frontiers. Amid this diplomatic backdrop, there is cautious optimism that the matter may be resolved soon on humanitarian grounds.
