– New announcement regarding Yamunamukh

Guwahati, 15 May (HS): Assam Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika on Thursday visited Nagon and Hojai districts and inspected the embankments under construction under the Water Resources Department along the Kapili river and inquired about the possible necessary measures for flood control.

The minister first took stock of two new embankment projects of about 9.5 km length going on in Garokhundha, Changchaki etc. areas falling under Barhampur assembly constituency. This construction work is going on on both sides of the river from Garokhundha to Changchaki and from Baregoga to Nij Narikali. He said that about 85% of the work of these projects has been completed and instructions have been given to complete the remaining work before the monsoon.

The minister said that to deal with the problem of flood and erosion, there is a need to build 8-9 km more embankment in the Barhampur area, which is being planned.

Earlier, during the Panchayat election campaign, the local people in the Yamunamukh area had demanded the minister to pay attention to the problem of flood and erosion of the Kapili river. Keeping his promise, today he reached Yamunamukh with MLA Jitu Goswami and inspected the sensitive places there. The minister directed that a new embankment of about eight kilometers will be built with Geo Mega Tube technology, so that the area can get protection.

After this, the minister also went to inspect the new embankment being built along the river from Kharikhana to Yogijan in Hojai district. Here too 85% of the work has been completed. He instructed the departmental engineers to complete the remaining work with quality within the stipulated time frame.
