Nepali student found dead in Kalinga hostel

Kathmandu, May 2 (HS): A Nepali student, Prisha Shah, was found dead hanging from a fan in her hostel at Kalinga Institute of Technology (KIIT) University in Odisha on Thursday, prompting an investigation by the Cuttack police. This incident marks the second suspected suicide of a Nepali student on campus in three months.

Cuttack Police Commissioner S. Devdutt confirmed that various aspects of Shah’s death are being thoroughly examined to prevent a repeat of earlier incidents. In February, another Nepali student, Prakriti Lamsal, died under suspicious circumstances after claiming to have faced sexual harassment, which led to protests over alleged institutional negligence.

Following Lamsal’s death, more than 1,000 Nepali students were temporarily required to leave the campus amidst rising unrest. The university and Odisha government have promised support and safety for the students.
