Netanyahu sidesteps court order to appoint David Gini as Shin Bet chief

Tel Aviv, May 23 (H.S.): Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced the appointment of Major General David Gini as the next head of the country’s internal security agency, Shin Bet. This appointment comes at a time when the Israeli Attorney General had made it clear that Netanyahu does not have the authority to make a new appointment.

Netanyahu’s announcement contradicts a recent Supreme Court decision, which deemed the government’s removal of former Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar as illegal. Following this, Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara warned Netanyahu that he cannot make new appointments to this sensitive position.

Major General David Gini is currently the head of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Training Command and General Staff Corps. He has extensive experience in security matters, but serious questions are now being raised about the legitimacy of his appointment.
