Chennai, 14 May (H.S.) : The Triplicane police arrested a Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) functionary, identified as Jamal (38), a district secretary, on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, for allegedly assaulting an All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) worker and causing injuries. The incident occurred on Monday night within the Triplicane police limits, escalating tensions between supporters of the two political parties in the area. The arrest was made following a complaint lodged by K. Suganthi (38) of Mangalapuram, Chetpet, who reported the assault to the authorities.
According to police reports, the altercation took place late Monday evening when a heated argument broke out between Jamal and the AIADMK worker, whose identity has not been disclosed. The dispute, reportedly rooted in political rivalry, quickly turned physical, resulting in the AIADMK worker sustaining injuries. The Triplicane police registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for assault and causing hurt. Jamal was taken into custody and is currently being questioned to ascertain the circumstances leading to the incident. The injured AIADMK worker received medical attention, though details about the severity of the injuries remain undisclosed.
The incident has drawn attention to the growing friction between NTK and AIADMK cadres in Chennai, particularly in the lead-up to the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Political analysts suggest that such clashes reflect the intensifying competition among regional parties vying for influence in urban constituencies like Triplicane. The NTK, led by Seeman, has been expanding its presence in Tamil Nadu, often positioning itself as a staunch alternative to established Dravidian parties like the AIADMK and DMK. This incident follows recent speculations about NTK’s potential alliances, which Seeman has publicly dismissed as “conjecture.”
Local residents and political observers expressed concern over the incident, urging party leaders to rein in their supporters to prevent further violence. The Triplicane police have increased patrolling in the area to maintain order and prevent retaliatory actions. A senior police official stated that investigations are ongoing to determine whether the assault was premeditated or a spontaneous
