
New Delhi, May 6 (HS): The domestic stock market finished lower today after experiencing fluctuations throughout the trading day. Initially, the market opened with slight gains, but selling pressure quickly emerged, causing the Sensex and Nifty indices to dip into negative territory. By noon, buyers tried to stabilize the market with increased buying; however, the overall condition showed minimal improvement. At the end of trading, the Sensex decreased by 0.19 percent, while the Nifty fell by 0.33 percent. Notably, significant selling was observed in sectors such as realty, PSU banking, and energy. Other indices like oil and gas, pharmaceuticals, capital goods, FMCG, public sector enterprises, and tech also closed lower. In contrast, there was consistent buying activity in the automobile sector.
The broader market suffered as well, resulting in the BSE mid-cap index declining by 2.66 percent, and the small-cap index dropped by 2.33 percent. The day’s weakness in the market resulted in a substantial loss for investors, with the combined wealth decreasing by approximately ₹7 lakh crore. The market capitalization of BSE-listed companies fell to ₹420.63 lakh crore from ₹427.48 lakh crore from the previous trading day, resulting in losses of around ₹6.85 lakh crore today.
Throughout the trading session, 4,072 stocks were active on the BSE, of which 787 gained, while 3,151 declined. On the NSE, 2,580 stocks were traded, with 489 gaining and 2,171 losing. Among the 30 Sensex stocks, 11 closed with gains while 19 declined; for the 50 Nifty stocks, 14 ended in the green and 36 in the red.
The Sensex commenced at 80,907.24 points but dropped to 80,481.03 points during trading, ultimately closing at 80,641.07 points, down 155.77 points. The Nifty began at 24,500.75 points, hit a low of 24,331.80 points, and finished at 24,379.60 points, down by 81.55 points. Top gainers included Hero MotoCorp and Bharti Airtel, while major losers comprised Adani Enterprises and Jio Financial.
