New Delhi, May 20 (HS): On Wednesday, the domestic stock market saw a significant decline, driven by poor global signals and heavy selling by foreign investors, marking the third straight day of losses. Initially, trading commenced with slight gains, but selling pressure swiftly emerged, causing the Sensex to drop nearly 1,100 points from its peak. The Sensex closed down 1.06% at 81,186.44 points, while the Nifty fell by 1.05% to 24,683.90 points.

Major sell-offs occurred in the automobile, banking, and FMCG sectors, with declines also noted in IT, capital goods, and metals, among others. This downward trend resulted in a loss exceeding ₹5 lakh crore in investor wealth, reducing the market capitalization of BSE-listed firms to ₹438.32 lakh crore. Out of 4,104 BSE stocks, 1,448 advanced while 2,522 fell, with only 3 of the 30 Sensex stocks gaining and 27 declining. Noteworthy gainers included Coal India (+1.34%) and ONGC (+1.09%), while major losers were Eternal (-4.10%) and Hero MotoCorp (-3.33%).
