Washington, May 26 (H.S.): U.S. President Donald Trump has postponed the implementation of a proposed 50 percent tariff on the European Union until July 9. He announced this decision following a request from Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, who called for an extension of the original June 1 deadline. Trump expressed his willingness to accommodate this request in a post on Truth Social.
Von der Leyen affirmed that the U.S. and EU maintain a significant trade relationship and indicated that Europe is prepared to advance negotiations promptly. In terms of tariffs, Trump had previously set a 20 percent tariff on the EU, which he later reduced to 10 percent for 90 days. Last week, he proposed a steep 50 percent tariff, citing challenges associated with dealing with the EU’s 27 member states. During an executive order signing at the White House, Trump emphasized the need for fair competition in trade.
