Kathmandu, June 6(HS): The US has canceled Nepal’s temporary protected status, impacting over 7,000 Nepali citizens in the country. The Department of Homeland Security announced that Nepal no longer qualifies for this status, with formal termination set for August 5, 2025. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem highlighted the criteria issue in a Federal Register notice. Affected individuals are encouraged to prepare for their return to Nepal unless they possess other legal immigration options.

Since Donald Trump’s return to power, over a thousand undocumented Nepali citizens have been deported. The US administration has advised those planning to leave to utilize the CBP One mobile application for departure facilitation. This special status was initially granted to Nepal after the 2015 earthquake, aiding displaced citizens in the US.
