28,000 fine imposed, 60 Kg unfit food destroyed during food safety drive in Bandipora

Bandipora, Jan 14 (KINS) :Ahead of the upcoming Mehraj-Alam festival, the Food Safety Department carried out an extensive inspection drive in Bandipora town and imposed fines amounting to 28,000 on erring food business operators for violating food safety norms.

The inspection as per news agency Kashmir Indepth News Service (KINS) was conducted by a joint team of Food Safety Officers from the Intelligence-cum-Legal Cell and the Food Safety team Bandipora, under the supervision of the Deputy Commissioner, Food Safety, Kashmir. The drive aimed to ensure the availability of safe and hygienic food for the public during the festive period.

During the drive, several Food Business Operators (FBOs), including bakers, butchers, restaurants and grocery shops, were inspected. Officials found multiple violations of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, prompting the imposition of penalties.

“Strict action was taken against those found flouting food safety norms. A cumulative fine of ₹28,000 was imposed to ensure compliance and deter future violations,” an official from the Food Safety Department said.

The team also destroyed around 60 kilograms of prepared food found unfit for human consumption on the spot. All butchers in the area were directed to install glass frames outside their shops to ensure hygienic display of meat.

“Failure to comply with hygiene instructions, including proper meat display, will invite stern action under the relevant rules,” the official warned.

The Food Business Operators were sensitized about maintaining proper sanitary and hygienic conditions in their establishments to safeguard public health.

Meanwhile, Commissioner, Food and Drugs Administration, J&K, Samita Sethi, stressed the need for intensified enforcement across the Union Territory.

“All enforcement officers have been directed to further strengthen inspection drives. Consumers are also urged to stay alert and report any food-related complaints on the toll-free helpline 104,” she said.

Reiterating its commitment, the Food Safety Department said it will continue to take strict measures to protect public health and ensure the supply of safe and wholesome food to consumers across Kashmir.(KINS)
