Jakarta, February 26 (HS): Indonesia’s Sulawesi island was shaken by an earthquake on Wednesday morning. Its magnitude was 6.1 on the Richter scale. It forced the residents living on the island to flee their homes. At present, there is no news of any damage or casualties.

According to Al Arabiya News, Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency said the earthquake occurred at 5:55 am local time on Wednesday. Its epicenter was located 45 kilometers southeast of East Bolaang Mongondo. Its epicenter was at a depth of 10 kilometers below the sea floor. The country’s meteorological agency said there is no possibility of a tsunami.

Sulawesi Island is sensitive to earthquakes. More than 100 people were killed in a 6.2 magnitude earthquake here in January 2021. In 2018, a 7.5 magnitude earthquake in Palu, Sulawesi and the subsequent tsunami killed more than 2,200 people. Apart from this, a 9.1 magnitude earthquake struck the country’s Aceh province in 2004. The tsunami that followed caused massive destruction. More than 170,000 people were killed in Indonesia in this geological upheaval.
