UN urges India and Pakistan to exercise maximum restraint

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

New York, April 25 (HS): The United Nations has voiced concerns regarding escalating tensions between India and Pakistan following a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged both nations to practice maximum restraint during this critical time. His spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, emphasized that Guterres is closely monitoring the situation and has appealed to both governments to prevent the situation from worsening.

However, Guterres has not yet contacted the leadership of India and Pakistan directly. In retaliation to the attack, India imposed diplomatic measures against Pakistan, including the suspension of the 1960 Indus Water Treaty, prompting further diplomatic actions from Pakistan.

India has accused Pakistan of fostering cross-border terrorism. Dujarric reiterated that peaceful resolutions can be achieved through mutual engagement. When asked about India’s treaty suspension, he reinforced the call for maximum restraint. Meanwhile, U.S. State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce highlighted that the situation is rapidly evolving, stating that they are keeping an eye on developments without taking a specific position on the matter.
