
Chennai, May 01 (H.S.): In the 49th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, Punjab Kings defeated Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by 4 wickets. With this victory, the Punjab team has moved to second place in the points table, while Chennai’s defeat puts them out of the playoff race. The hero of Punjab’s victory was Yuzvendra Chahal, who took a hat-trick and dismissed four batsmen in a single over, dismantling Chennai’s batting order.
In the match played at Chennai’s M.A. Chidambaram Stadium (Chepauk), Punjab was given a target of 191 runs. In pursuit of this target, Punjab Kings got off to a good start with Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran. However, Priyansh Arya was dismissed after scoring 23 runs. Following this, Prabhsimran, along with captain Shreyas Iyer, propelled Punjab’s innings forward, forming a partnership of 75 runs for the second wicket. This partnership was broken by Noor Ahmad, who dismissed Prabhsimran (54 runs). Nehal Wadhera also did not last long at the crease and was out after scoring 5 runs, while Shashans Singh made a contribution of 23 runs before getting out.
Wickets kept falling at one end, but Shreyas Iyer remained steady on the other, scoring 72 runs off 41 balls and taking the match into Punjab’s grasp. However, he was unable to hit the winning shot and was bowled by Pathirana. The runs required for victory came from Marco Jansen’s bat. Jansen remained unbeaten on 4 runs, along with Josh Inning, who also remained unbeaten on 6 runs.
For Chennai, Khalil Ahmed and Mathisha Pathirana took two wickets each, while Ravindra Jadeja and Noor Ahmad got one wicket each.
Earlier, after losing the toss and batting first, the Chennai Super Kings’ team was restricted to 190 runs. For CSK, Sam Curran was the top scorer with 88 runs, while Dewald Brevis contributed 32 runs. Ravindra Jadeja scored 17 runs, and Mahendra Singh Dhoni made 11 runs.
For Punjab Kings, Yuzvendra Chahal took 4 wickets, including achieving the remarkable feat of a hat-trick. Arshdeep Singh and Marco Jansen each took 2 wickets, while Harpreet and Ajmatullah Umarzai took one wicket each.
