Delhi, 8 May (H.S.): Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi arrived in India on Thursday amidst heightened tensions between India and Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack. Earlier, he had met with Pakistan’s leadership, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, calling for restraint to prevent further escalation. On May 5, following the Pahalgam incident, which resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals, mostly tourists, Araghchi emphasized the need for both nations to maintain peace.
In response to the terror attack, India executed ‘Operation Sindoor’, targeting terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, marking a significant military response. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri explained that these precision strikes served as both a reactive and preemptive measure against cross-border terrorism, aimed at dismantling terrorist infrastructure.
Araghchi’s visit to India is expected to cover bilateral issues and regional developments, with meetings planned with senior Indian officials, including a co-chairing session with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. This visit coincides with the 75th anniversary of the India-Iran Friendship Treaty. Additionally, he will meet with Indian President Droupadi Murmu at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Tehran condemned the Pahalgam attack, expressing condolences for the victims. Araghchi also reaffirmed Iran’s readiness to mediate between India and Pakistan, noting their shared historical and cultural ties. Discussions during his trip will also address trade payments, banking arrangements to bypass US sanctions, and further development of the Chabahar port, as outlined in their 10-year agreement signed in May 2024.
