Moscow, May 16 (H.S.): Russia’s Chief of Army Staff General Oleg Salyukov has been removed from his post. This dramatic change is being prominently discussed in other Western countries’ newspapers amid the ebb and flow of peace talks between Ukraine and Russia.
According to a Reports , Oleg Salyukov is a longtime associate of Russian President Vladimir Putin. It was he who made the decision to remove him from the position of Chief of Army Staff. Putin’s decision comes at a time when Russia is under international pressure concerning the Ukraine war and military strategy. Salyukov had been serving as the Chief of Army Staff since 2014. He has now been appointed as the Deputy Secretary of the Russian Security Council.
General Salyukov’s tenure was marked by the incorporation of modern weapons and strategic reforms. The sudden attack in the Kursk region of Ukraine in 2024 raised several questions regarding the security of Russia’s borders. After this incident, pressure increased on Putin to change the ground strategy. Currently, it has not been announced who will take over Salyukov’s position.
This change is considered significant within the Ministry of Defense. Just a few days ago, economic expert Andrei Belousov was appointed as the new Defense Minister, replacing Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu.
