Sikkim State Day is celebrated every year on May 16. On this day in 1975, Sikkim became the 22nd state of India. This day marks the anniversary of Sikkim’s transition from a monarchy to a state of India, which occurred after a referendum in which 97.5 percent of participants supported the abolition of the monarchy.
