ICG rescues crew from sunken cargo ship in sea

New Delhi, May 16 (H.S.): The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has successfully rescued six crew members from the cargo ship MSV Salamat, which sank about 60-70 nautical miles southwest of Mangalore. The crew was brought to New Mangalore Port on Friday after receiving first aid, where local officials will interview them about the sinking circumstances. ICG Commander Amit Uniyal stated that MSV Salamat departed from Mangalore Port on May 12, carrying cement and construction materials to Kadmat Island in the Lakshadweep Islands.

The ship began taking on water around 5:30 AM on May 14 and sank shortly after. The six crew members jumped into the sea for safety and boarded a small boat.The vessel MT Epic Susui noticed the survivors drifting approximately 52 nautical miles off Surathkal’s coast and alerted the ICG at 12:15 PM on May 14. The ICG ship Vikram, on routine patrol, was redirected to the area and promptly located the crew in a dinghy. The rescued individuals are Ismail Sharif, Aleman Ahmed Bhai Ghavda, Kakal Suleiman Ismail, Akbar Abdul Surani, Kasam Ismail Mehpani, and Ajmal. The cause of the flooding is still under investigation. Additionally, a Pakistani national aboard the cargo ship MT R Ocean was denied entry at Karwar Port due to heightened India-Pakistan tensions.
