The President posted on X that the news of the demise of astrophysicist Dr. Jayant Narlikar is extremely sorrowful. The internationally acclaimed scientist Dr. Narlikar has left an indelible mark through his work that will inspire future generations. His passion for popularizing science helped educate a large number of people, especially the youth. I express my condolences to his family members, friends, and admirers.

He was a great personality, particularly in the field of astrophysics. His pioneering work, especially in major theoretical frameworks, will continue to be valued by generations of researchers. The Renowned astrophysicist, science communicator, and Padma Vibhushan awardee Dr. Jayant Vishnu Narlikar passed away on Tuesday in Pune. He was 87 years old.
Dr.Jayant Narlikar, born on 19 July 1938 in Kolhapur, completed his undergraduate studies at Banaras Hindu University and earned distinction at Cambridge University as a Wrangler and Tyson Medallist in the Mathematical Tripos. After returning to India, he worked at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) from 1972 to 1989 and was instrumental in establishing IUCAA in 1988, serving as its founding director. An internationally recognized cosmologist, he promoted alternative models to the Big Bang theory, excelled in science communication, and authored several works. He is survived by his three daughters, following the passing of his wife, Mangala Narlikar, in 2023.
