I learned there that once I get starts, I will convert them into big ones, says KL Rahul

Leeds, June 24 (HS): Indian batsman KL Rahul believes that results in cricket do not always correlate with talent, preparation, fitness, and effort. His journey in Test cricket has repeatedly proven this point. Despite scoring seven out of eight centuries in challenging conditions overseas, he has never been able to himself as a permanent fixture in the Indian Test batting order. Before the Headingley Test, his average was 33.57, which is considered quite low compared to his skills.

On Monday, when the team’s innings seemed to be faltering on the fourth day morning, Rahul played a crucial innings of 137 runs in India’s second innings. In the post-match press conference, Rahul stated, The sooner you understand that there is no definitive relationship between your preparation and the results of your game, the calmer you can remain. This mindset gives you the best chance to play at this level for a long time.

He also shared that he learned this perspective from senior players. He said, All you can do is give your best. But there are no guarantees in this game. Be happy when you have a good day. Even on a bad day, be happy just to have the opportunity to play. That’s how I view the game.

Rahul’s recent tour of Australia was also an example of this ups and downs. In the absence of Rohit Sharma, he had the opportunity to open in Perth and Brisbane, where he scored 26, 77, and 84 runs, respectively. However, by the end of the series, his average was only 30.66.

He said, When you start and are unable to convert those starts into big innings, it can be very disappointing. I was happy with my batting approach in Australia, but I was also very frustrated for not being able to make big scores. I had opportunities in every match, but I couldn’t capitalize on them. This is the beauty and brutality of the game.

Another characteristic of Rahul’s career has been that he has never scored 400 runs in any series. This has been a reason why he couldn’t secure a permanent place in the team and often got opportunities due to someone else’s injury or absence.

To this, Rahul said, In the last few years, I have accepted that I don’t have a fixed position. Playing different roles inspires me and brings new challenges to my game. It motivates me to improve myself. He also mentioned that he enjoys returning to the role of opening. He said, I have always opened in my early cricketing life. It feels good to return to this role, and I am happy that I can contribute to the team.

Rahul’s admission indicates that he is now focusing more on the process than the results—a perspective that could bring him more stability and success in the future.
