Mexico City, 13 July (H.S.): After Trump’s announcement of global protectionist policies, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum indicated that each country was receiving correspondence from Trump and expressed confidence in securing a deal with the US, having prior experience in negotiations. Mexico-US relations have been strained, marked by increased migrant roundups, livestock border closures due to an infestation, and accusations from US Attorney General Pam Bondi labeling Mexico as an adversary.
Trump’s letter threatened tariffs on Mexico for insufficient action against drug cartels. Nevertheless, discussions between the Sheinbaum and Trump administrations continued, with Mexico positioned to benefit from US protectionist measures.
Establishing a new binational working group, Mexico and the US aim to address security, migration, and economic challenges, with the group tasked to find alternatives to tariffs and protect jobs across the border, as stated by Mexican Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard on Saturday.
