New Delhi, July 28(HS): The domestic stock market closed significantly lower for the third consecutive trading day on Monday, beginning the session weakly. Initial buying efforts pushed the Sensex and Nifty indices briefly into positive territory, but intense selling pressure quickly reversed this trend. Throughout the first trading session, buyers repeatedly attempted to stabilize the market but to no avail as selling persisted. The second session saw selling intensify further, leading to a continued decline in the stock market. By the end of the day, the Sensex closed down by 0.70 percent and the Nifty by 0.63 percent. Notable selling was observed across sectors such as energy, IT, and infrastructure, with other sectors including metal, realty, public sector enterprises, banking, capital goods, automobiles, pharmaceuticals, consumer durables, oil and gas, and tech also closing lower. Only the FMCG sector managed to register slight gains.
The broader market reflected continuous selling pressures as well, evident with the BSE’s mid-cap index down by 0.73 percent and the small-cap index down by 1.31 percent. Consequently, investors lost over ₹3.94 lakh crore in market value, with the BSE market capitalization falling to ₹447.85 lakh crore from ₹451.67 lakh crore since the last trading day. This resulted in an approximate loss of ₹3.82 lakh crore attributed to today’s trading activities.
Active trading occurred in 4,299 shares on the BSE, with 1,264 shares closing higher while 2,874 shares declined. On the NSE, 2,716 shares were actively traded, with 673 advancing and 2,043 declining. Among the Sensex stocks, 7 closed higher and 23 lower, while the Nifty saw 16 gainers and 34 losers.
