Trump optimistic about summit with Putin and Zelensky

US President Donald Trump

Washington, 7 August (H.S.): Donald Trump indicated a good chance for a potential summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, referencing very good talks that took place between his envoy, Steve Witkoff, and Putin. At the White House, Trump mentioned the very good prospect for a meeting but provided no specifics. The Kremlin stated the talks were constructive, highlighting an exchange of signals but remained vague on outcomes. This meeting occurred shortly before Trump’s deadline for Russia to accept a ceasefire in Ukraine or face new sanctions. Trump later updated some European allies regarding these discussions on his Truth Social platform, emphasizing a collective agreement among allies that the war needs to end, promising collaborative efforts in the near future.

The White House confirmed Russia’s interest in meeting with Trump, who is willing to meet both leaders. Zelensky mentioned he had been in contact with Trump concerning Witkoff’s visit, affirming that European leaders were included in the conversation. Zelensky expressed concerns that Russia might only act toward peace when it faces financial difficulties. Trump claimed that hefty sanctions would be imposed on Russia, which could also affect nations trading with it should it not proceed with peace. The talks between Putin and Witkoff were reportedly cordial, even though Trump has expressed frustration over stagnant negotiations.

Images from Russian media depicted a friendly demeanor between Putin and Witkoff, reaffirming their prior meetings. Post-discussion, the White House announced Trump signed an executive order implementing a 25% tariff on India for purchasing Russian oil, effective August 27, criticizing India’s lack of regard for Ukrainian casualties.

The outlook for a rapid settlement appears bleak as Russia continues its aggressive air assaults on Ukraine, despite Trump’s warning of sanctions. Prior to his presidency, Trump claimed he could swiftly resolve the conflict, yet it has persisted, leading to a shift in his tone toward Russia. Trump noted in a previous statement the disheartening repeat of peace discussions followed by renewed hostilities.

Three rounds of talks in Istanbul have failed to yield resolution since the start of Moscow’s full invasion three-and-a-half years ago, with unacceptable demands from the Kremlin deterring progress in negotiations. Notably, the US administration recently approved an additional $200 million in defense assistance to Ukraine following discussions focused on military cooperation and drone production between Trump and Zelensky. Ukraine has actively utilized drones against Russian energy sites, while Moscow continues its attacks on Ukrainian cities, including a recent deadly raid in Kyiv. Zelensky condemned the ongoing assaults as ruthless acts to instill fear among the populace.
