Coal India Seals Pact with Konkan Railway to Strengthen Rail Infrastructure for Coal Transport

New Delhi, August 19 (HS): Public sector giant Coal India Limited (CIL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) in Kolkata to jointly develop rail infrastructure projects.

The non-binding agreement was signed by CIL’s Director (Technical) Achyut Ghathak and KRCL’s Director (Finance) Rajesh Bhadang in the presence of CIL Chairman P.M. Prasad, along with senior officials from both organizations.

According to the company’s statement to the stock exchange on Tuesday, the strategic partnership with KRCL will focus on the development and maintenance of railway infrastructure dedicated to Coal India and its subsidiaries. This collaboration is expected to significantly enhance coal evacuation and transportation efficiency.

Coal India, which accounts for over 80% of the country’s domestic coal output, has been actively strengthening its railway network to streamline coal movement. Prior to this, the mining major had also entered into an agreement with Indian Port Rail & Ropeway Corporation Limited for similar infrastructure initiatives.

The MoU is being seen as a crucial step towards boosting coal logistics and supporting the government’s vision of ensuring seamless coal supply across the nation.
