CDC in Crisis as Director Defies White House Dismissal Order

CDC Director Dr. Susan Monarez

Washington, Aug 29(HS):

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has plunged into turmoil after its director, Dr. Susan Monarez, refused to step down despite a White House announcement declaring her removal. In office barely a month, Monarez—confirmed by the Senate in July—rejected what she called reckless, unscientific directives, accusing Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. of weaponising public health.

Her lawyers argue that her dismissal is unlawful, claiming only the president can revoke her appointment. The administration insists Monarez was ousted for being not aligned with the president’s agenda, and is poised to replace her with acting director Jim O’Neill, a former tech investor and deputy HHS secretary under Kennedy.

The leadership clash has triggered a wave of resignations inside the CDC. Senior figures, including Chief Medical Officer Debra Houry, vaccine chief Demetre Daskalakis, and infectious disease expert Daniel Jernigan, have stepped down citing disillusionment with vaccine policy and political interference. Reports also suggest other senior officials, including Dr. Jennifer Layden, have quietly quit.

The showdown comes as the FDA approved a new, narrowed rollout of Covid vaccines, limiting doses largely to seniors, drawing sharp criticism from public health experts. The disarray follows earlier mass layoffs that saw about 600 CDC staff dismissed, including infectious disease researchers and environmental health specialists.

Monarez, a career infectious-disease scientist and the first CDC director in five decades without a medical degree, has positioned herself as a defender of science, saying she chose “protecting the public over serving a political agenda.”

Senator Bernie Sanders condemned her firing as reckless and demanded an investigation. Meanwhile, the White House maintains that agency heads must execute the president’s health vision—“or be shown the door.”

The crisis leaves America’s premier public health agency leaderless at a critical time—and deepens fears over the politicisation of science at the heart of government.
