New Delhi, September 11 (HS): Nepal’s ousted Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s party, the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist), has broken its silence on the recent protests and violent incidents. Party General Secretary Shankar Pokharel demanded the identification of those responsible and called for strict legal action. He condemned the extensive damage caused to both public and private property. Expressing condolences to the families of those killed during the unrest, the party also wished for the swift recovery of the injured.
In an official statement issued on Thursday on behalf of the party’s central secretariat, Pokharel expressed grave concern over the destructive protests that shook the country on Monday and Tuesday. Acknowledging that the demonstrations were fueled by demands related to social media restrictions, anti-corruption efforts, and good governance, UML denounced the large-scale damage to property. The party also extended sympathy to the bereaved families and prayed for the quick recovery of the wounded.
On Tuesday, the UML described the widespread incidents of arson, looting, and violence across the nation as tragic. It said that government buildings, including the Parliament, the President’s Office, Singha Durbar, the Supreme Court, constitutional bodies, airports, police stations, private property, and rare archival records, had been destroyed—inflicting losses that the country would not overcome for decades. The party also questioned the delayed and inadequate response of security agencies, including Nepal Police, the Armed Police Force, and the Nepal Army.
Pokharel instructed party cadres to remain united, keep morale high, assist in cleaning destroyed offices and public places, promote social harmony, and support affected citizens.
Following Prime Minister Oli’s resignation, UML underscored the need for a constitutional and democratic resolution to the political crisis. The party urged the President to initiate meaningful dialogue addressing youth concerns over anti-corruption measures, elimination of nepotism, good governance, and employment generation. UML also called upon the Federal Parliament, Judiciary, Provincial Assemblies, Provincial Governments, and Local Bodies to play a constructive role in safeguarding democracy. Stressing the importance of coordination and understanding among pro-constitution forces, the party underlined that such unity was vital for managing the extraordinary situation facing the country.
