San Sebastián, September 14(HS): Kylian Mbappe delivered a match-winning performance as 10-man Real Madrid overcame adversity to secure a 2-1 victory over Real Sociedad in La Liga on Saturday, preserving their flawless start to the season.
Mbappe opened the scoring with a blistering run and precise finish in the 12th minute, before setting up Arda Guler to double Madrid’s advantage just before half-time. However, the visitors were forced to fight hard after defender Dean Huijsen was sent off on the half-hour mark for a last-man foul on Mikel Oyarzabal.
Despite their numerical disadvantage, Carlo Ancelotti’s side showed resolve. Guler’s strike proved decisive as Sociedad pulled one back from the penalty spot through Oyarzabal following a Dani Carvajal handball. The hosts pressed for an equaliser but were held at bay by determined Madrid defending.
With their fourth straight win, Madrid sit atop the La Liga table with 12 points, three clear of Athletic Bilbao, who suffered their first defeat of the season against Alaves. Atletico Madrid also got off the mark with a 2-0 win at Villarreal, while champions Barcelona will host Valencia on Sunday.
Reflecting on the victory, Mbappe praised his team’s resilience. “The red card changed the game, but we stayed brave and got the result. The season is long, and I must keep performing at this level,” he told Real Madrid TV.
