US Secretary of State Marco Rubio Heads to Israel Amid Rift Over Qatar Strike, West Bank Settlements

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio speaks to reporters at Joint Base Andrews before departing for Israel

Washington, 14 September (H.S.): US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to arrive in Israel on Sunday, following his meeting with Qatar’s prime minister, as part of a delicate diplomatic effort to balance relations between key Middle East allies. Rubio’s two-day visit will focus on discussing operational goals in Gaza and reaffirming the United States’ priorities in Israeli and regional security. The Trump administration emphasized its commitment to combating anti-Israel actions, including opposing unilateral recognition of a Palestinian state.

The visit comes amid heightened tensions after Israel’s recent airstrike targeting Hamas leaders in Qatar, which drew widespread criticism and complicated ceasefire efforts. Rubio underscored that while Washington and President Donald Trump disapproved of the strike, the US-Israel alliance remains strong. His discussions in Israel will include efforts to secure the release of 48 hostages held by Hamas, ending the Gaza conflict, and planning for Gaza’s reconstruction—a complex task requiring decisions on leadership, funding, and oversight.

Rubio’s visit follows international concern over humanitarian conditions in Gaza and strained mediation efforts, as Israel intensifies military action and expands West Bank settlements. After his meetings in Israel, Rubio is expected to join President Trump in the UK to continue diplomatic engagements on broader global challenges .
