New Delhi, September 17 (HS): India’s Sarvesh Kushare made history at the World Athletics Championships 2025 in Tokyo, producing a personal-best performance to secure a joint sixth-place finish in the men’s high jump final.
Kushare cleared 2.28 meters on his final attempt, marking the best jump of his career so far. To remain in medal contention, he needed to surpass the national record of 2.29 meters and clear 2.31 meters, but fell short in all three attempts. American jumper Tias Wilson, who also registered his season-best at 2.28 meters, shared the sixth position with him.
The gold medal went to New Zealand’s reigning Olympic champion Hamish Kerr, who triumphed with a leap of 2.36 meters. South Korea’s Woo Sang-hyeok claimed silver with 2.34 meters, while Jan Štefela of Czechia secured bronze after clearing 2.31 meters.
Earlier in the qualification round, Kushare had already etched his name into history by leaping 2.25 meters, becoming the first Indian male athlete ever to reach the high jump final at a World Championship.
