Los Angeles, September 18(HS): ABC has indefinitely suspended veteran late-night host Jimmy Kimmel’s show following his controversial comments on the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Kimmel criticized what he called efforts by MAGA land to politicize the murder, remarks that sparked backlash from ABC affiliates and federal regulators.

Nexstar Media Group, which operates 23 ABC affiliates, led the call to pull the show, labeling Kimmel’s comments offensive and insensitive during a critical moment in the nation’s political dialogue. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) also weighed in, with Chairman Brendan Carr warning broadcasters about the potential regulatory consequences of airing content viewed as politically divisive or misleading.

President Donald Trump welcomed the suspension, calling Kimmel zero talent and praising ABC for having the courage to do what had to be done on his Truth Social platform. Trump also targeted other late-night hosts Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers, calling for their cancellation.

Kimmel’s remarks included calling the response to Kirk’s death by some MAGA supporters as exploiting the tragedy for political gain and harshly critiqued Trump’s and others’ handling of the investigation. The suspension leaves uncertainty over the fate of the show, whose contract expires in May 2026. This development follows a turbulent period for late-night television, spotlighting the fraught intersection of political commentary and media responsibility.
