Dubai, September 21(HS): Bangladesh secured a tense four-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in a gripping Asia Cup 2025 Super Fours match at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. The win was spearheaded by impressive half-centuries from Saif Hassan (61 off 45 balls) and Towhid Hridoy (58 off 37 balls), helping Bangladesh chase down the target of 169 with just one ball to spare.
Sri Lanka, batting first, posted 168 for seven despite a strong start from Dasun Shanaka, who blasted an unbeaten 64 runs off 37 balls. Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis provided early momentum with brisk starts, but middle-order wickets hampered their scoring ability. Shanaka and Charith Asalanka added valuable runs with a crucial 57-run partnership for the fifth wicket, but tight bowling from Bangladesh’s Mustafizur Rahman and Mahedi Hasan kept Sri Lanka in check.
During the chase, Bangladesh lost early wicket Tanzid Hasan but steadied through a powerful 59-run partnership between Litton Das and Saif Hassan. Hassan’s aggressive stroke play included three sixes and vital boundaries, including two blistering sixes off Dunith Wellalage. Towhid Hridoy’s assault, featuring a 16-run over against Kamindu Mendis, further powered the chase.
Despite losing wickets in the final over, including Hassan and Hridoy, Bangladesh held their nerve to cross the finish line at 169/6 in 19.5 overs, marking their third-highest successful T20 chase.
The victory marks a significant turnaround for Bangladesh, who had struggled earlier in the tournament and suffered a previous defeat to Sri Lanka in the group stages. With this win, Bangladesh positions itself strongly in the fight to reach the Asia Cup final.
Sri Lanka faced setbacks with key players like Dunith Wellalage returning from personal leave and important quick wickets in the middle overs. The match was a testament to competitive spirit and cricketing finesse from both sides, setting an exciting tone for the Super Fours phase of the tournament.
