Washington, DC,September 21(HS): The Pentagon has introduced sweeping new restrictions on journalists, warning that press credentials will be revoked for anyone found releasing unauthorised information under a contentious update to facility access rules. The move, outlined in a memo sent to all building reporters, reflects growing concern over recent security leaks and aligns press conduct with protocols on US military bases nationwide.
Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, the controversial new head of the rebranded Department of War, declared on social media: The ‘press’ does not run the Pentagon—the people do… Wear a badge and follow the rules—or go home. The updated policy obliges journalists to sign an agreement not to disclose information lacking official clearance—regardless of whether it’s classified—while also limiting media movement within the Pentagon.
The rules, officials say, are meant to safeguard national security and public trust, though critics warn they threaten press freedom and could chill investigative reporting on sensitive military and foreign affairs issues. The update comes after a string of leaks undermined administration claims and exposed private strategy, including mishandling incidents linked to both Secretary Hegseth and top officials.
As the Pentagon faces mounting scrutiny over operational transparency, media groups are bracing for further restrictions—and fresh questions about the future of independent reporting on America’s military and security establishments.
