Delhi, 3 October (H.S.): Brilliant centuries from opener K.L. Rahul, young wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel, and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja placed India in complete control against the West Indies on the second day of the first Test at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Friday.
At stumps, India stood firmly at 448 for 5 in 128 overs, stretching their first-innings lead to a massive 286 runs, after the West Indies had been bundled out for just 162 in their opening innings.
Resuming at 121/2, India lost captain Shubman Gill (50 off 100 balls, 5 fours) early in the morning session, caught in the slips off Roston Chase (2/37) after a 98-run stand with Rahul. Rahul, playing with composure, brought up his century but was dismissed soon after lunch for exactly 100 runs, trapped by left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican.
The momentum then shifted decisively as Dhruv Jurel and Ravindra Jadeja combined for a superb 206-run partnership for the fifth wicket. Jurel, continuing his impressive rise in Test cricket, registered his maiden Test century, scoring 125 runs before being dismissed by off-spinner Khary Pierre.
In the final session, Jadeja reached his century as well, finishing unbeaten on 104, anchoring India’s innings. He will resume on the third morning alongside Washington Sundar (9 not out).
For the visitors, Chase was the most effective bowler with two wickets, while Khary Pierre, Jayden Seales, and Jomel Warrican claimed one wicket apiece.
