Mumbai,October 5(HS): In a detailed press conference following Shubman Gill’s appointment as India’s new ODI captain, Chairman of Selectors Ajit Agarkar articulated the rationale behind key team decisions including the captaincy change, player exclusions, and future planning. Agarkar acknowledged the complexities of managing three different captains across formats and underscored the strategic focus on the 2027 World Cup.
Agarkar clarified that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will continue to contribute as specialist batsmen in ODIs, with expectations centered simply on their proven ability to score runs. He emphasized that their involvement is vital despite their retirement from Tests and T20Is.
On Ravindra Jadeja’s exclusion for the upcoming Australia tour, Agarkar explained the balance challenges of carrying multiple left-arm spinners and stressed Jadeja remains an integral part of future plans, especially given his all-round skills and fielding prowess.
On Shubman Gill’s elevation, Agarkar stressed it was a natural progression as Gill had long served as vice-captain and demonstrated leadership capabilities, particularly during the England series. He acknowledged the challenge of preparing a new captain in a format with fewer matches but expressed confidence in Gill’s ability to handle workload and pressure.
The selector also highlighted fitness clearances for veteran players and outlined a cautious approach to managing workload for key fast bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah and rest timelines for injured players including Hardik Pandya.
