Washington, D.C., United States, October 7(HS): The US government shutdown stretched into its fifth consecutive day on Monday after the Senate once again failed to approve competing funding proposals from Democrats and Republicans, both falling short of the 60 votes needed to reopen federal agencies. Thousands of federal employees remain furloughed or are working without pay, with President Donald Trump warning that continued gridlock could trigger mass layoffs.
Monday’s voting began with Democrats’ funding bill, which failed 45-50, followed by the Republican alternative falling short at 52-42. Trump took to social media to blame Democrats for the shutdown, while indicating he is open to negotiations that might include healthcare provisions, a primary sticking point preventing bipartisan agreement.
Democrats demand that any funding legislation safeguard health insurance subsidies for lower-income Americans and restore cuts to Medicaid made during Trump’s previous administration. Republicans, meanwhile, advocate for a “clean” funding bill without attached healthcare provisions and have accused Democrats of using the standoff to extend healthcare benefits to undocumented immigrants—an accusation Democrats deny.
In the Oval Office, Trump said negotiations with Democratic leaders could yield “very good things” in healthcare, though Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer rebutted these claims on social media, calling them untrue. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt underscored the likelihood of layoffs if the shutdown endures and urged Democrats to relent and reopen the government.
Amid bipartisan finger-pointing, House Speaker Mike Johnson criticized Democrats for negotiating in bad faith, while House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries accused Republicans of misleading the public about Democratic intentions.
The stalemate underscores Washington’s deep political divide as federal operations remain paralyzed.
