Olympic Medalist Aman Sehrawat Appeals One-Year Ban, Admits First Mistake

Aman

Delhi, 14 October (H.S.): Paris 2024 Olympic bronze medalist wrestler Aman Sehrawat has appealed for the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) to lift a one-year ban imposed on him after he failed to make weight for the World Championships. Admitting his fault, Sehrawat stated on Tuesday that he would personally meet with the federation president to request a reconsideration of the decision.

Speaking at a felicitation ceremony organized by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), Sehrawat acknowledged his error. I will meet him (the WFI President) and make a request. This is my first mistake; it will not happen again, he said, referring to his plan to meet WFI President Sanjay Singh.

The WFI had issued a show-cause notice to Sehrawat on September 23, 2025. After his response on September 29 was deemed unsatisfactory, the disciplinary committee recommended a one-year suspension, effective from September 23.

Sehrawat explained that sudden stomach pain the day before his bout prevented him from completing his weight-cut process. I only had to lose about 600-700 grams. But I suddenly experienced stomach pain and went straight to my room. My condition did not improve even after taking medication, he revealed.

The 22-year-old was a strong medal contender for India in the 57 kg freestyle category at the World Championships but was disqualified for being 1.7 kg overweight. The wrestler emphasized that the ban would have a significant impact on his career, potentially forcing him to miss major upcoming events.

There are big tournaments in the coming year like the Asian Games and the World Championships. The Asian Games happen once in four years. Missing this opportunity would be a huge loss for me, Sehrawat stated. He also mentioned that in addition to meeting the WFI president, he plans to seek assistance from the Sports Ministry.

We will try our best. We will also request the Sports Ministry, he added.

Aman Sehrawat is considered one of India’s most promising wrestlers, having secured a bronze medal in the 57 kg category at the Paris 2024 Olympics. His future ambitions include winning medals at the 2026 Asian Championships and the 2026 Asian Games.
