LONDON/WASHINGTON | , October 14(HS): U.S. Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff has publicly praised the incredible input and tireless efforts of UK National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell in brokering the Gaza ceasefire, providing a significant endorsement that directly counters sharp criticism from other American and Israeli officials who downplayed Britain’s involvement.
In a pointed rebuttal to a brewing diplomatic spat, Witkoff wrote on social media that he wished to acknowledge the vital role of the UK in assisting and co-ordinating efforts that have led us to this historic day in Israel. His comments stood in stark contrast to those of Mike Huckabee, the US ambassador to Israel, who had labelled UK Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson delusional for suggesting Britain played a key role.
Israel’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Sharren Haskel, also argued the UK’s recognition of a Palestinian state had emboldened Hamas. The specific praise for Powell comes at a moment of political vulnerability for the adviser and provided a boost for the UK government. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, who attended the peace summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, affirmed he had full confidence in Powell, stating, He is doing an excellent job. You heard what Steve Witkoff said about him today.
The endorsement, however, drew criticism from Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch, who called it tragic that the government was seemingly having to beg people to send tweets to say something nice about Jonathan Powell.
Government sources highlighted the close, almost daily contact between Powell and Witkoff, a relationship strengthened through their collaboration on the Ukraine war. Powell, a key architect of the Good Friday Agreement, is expected to be consulted on future phases of the Gaza deal, particularly concerning the decommissioning of weapons.
