Kolkata, February 25 (H.S.) : Tremors were felt in Kolkata and nearby areas on Tuesday morning after a 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck the Bay of Bengal. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the earthquake was recorded at 6:10 AM, sending mild waves of panic among residents.
An IMD official confirmed that the epicenter was located in the Bay of Bengal at a depth of 91 kilometers. The quake was primarily felt near Odisha’s Puri coast, with its coordinates recorded at 19.52°N latitude and 88.55°E longitude. Fortunately, no casualties or damage have been reported so far.
The early morning tremors briefly unsettled people in Kolkata and surrounding regions. However, experts have assured that such mild to moderate earthquakes are common in the Bay of Bengal region. Since this particular quake originated deep under the sea, the risk of significant damage was minimal.
Meteorologists explained that the earthquake’s epicenter being offshore limited its impact to coastal areas. While some residents in Odisha and West Bengal reported light tremors, there is no immediate cause for concern. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, and officials have urged people to remain calm.
Experts highlight that the Bay of Bengal and its adjoining areas fall under a seismically sensitive zone, making occasional tremors a natural occurrence. Given the moderate intensity of this earthquake, there is no substantial threat, but scientists continue to keep a watchful eye on seismic activity in the region.
With no reports of damage or injuries, life in Kolkata and nearby areas has returned to normal. However, residents are advised to stay alert and follow safety guidelines in case of future tremors.
