Srinagar- Dense fog blanketed large parts of Kashmir on Thursday, disrupting traffic movement and causing delays during the morning and evening rush hours.
Several major roads across the Valley witnessed poor visibility, including the Srinagar-Jammu national highway, Baramulla-Handwara road, Pulwama-Kulgam route and key roads within Srinagar city.
Officials said visibility dropped to less than 50 metres at several locations, forcing vehicles to move at slow speeds.
“Fog has significantly reduced visibility in many parts of the Valley, affecting both local and inter district travel,” a Traffic Police officer said. “Additional personnel have been deployed on major routes to regulate traffic and prevent accidents.”
Transporters have been advised to take precautionary measures and avoid unnecessary travel during peak fog hours, the officer added.
Passengers travelling on highways reported delays due to slow moving traffic. Mohammad Irfan, a daily commuter from Baramulla to Srinagar, said it took him over an hour to cover a short stretch in the morning due to the dense fog.
Meteorological officials said foggy conditions are likely to persist over the next few days, particularly during early mornings and late evenings, owing to falling night temperatures.
The administration has urged motorists to exercise caution, use fog lights, maintain safe distances and strictly follow traffic advisories. Tourists have also been advised to check road conditions before travelling and avoid unnecessary night journeys, especially in fog prone and higher altitude areas.
