Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurates national IED data management system, calls it next-gen shield against terrorism

Srinagar, Jan 09 (KINS): Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah on Friday inaugurated the National IED Data Management System (NIDMS) of the National Security Guard (NSG) through video conferencing, terming it a major milestone in strengthening India’s counter-terrorism capabilities.

The event was attended by the Union Home Secretary, Director of the Intelligence Bureau, Director General of NSG, Directors General of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), and Directors General of Police from various states.

Addressing the gathering, Amit Shah said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government has undertaken extensive efforts over the past six years to systematically generate, collect, and organise security-related data. He said the launch of NIDMS marks a significant step towards integrating these data sources and developing advanced Artificial Intelligence-based analytical systems.

The Home Minister said NIDMS would play a crucial role in the investigation and analysis of terrorist incidents, particularly those involving explosions and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). Describing it as a next-generation security shield, Shah said the platform would help agencies understand patterns, trends, and operational methods used in terror attacks across the country.

He noted that while the Ministry of Home Affairs had accumulated vast amounts of data over the years, much of it existed in isolated silos. “NIDMS will connect these datasets into a single, comprehensive and online platform, enabling seamless sharing and analysis,” he said.

With the launch of NIDMS, a two-way integrated data platform will now be accessible to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), Anti-Terrorism Squads (ATS), state police forces, and all CAPFs. Shah said that data related to any explosion or IED incident anywhere in the country can be uploaded onto the system, providing investigators with instant guidance and analytical support.

The Home Minister said the NSG has maintained detailed records of bomb explosion incidents in the country since 1999. Through NIDMS, this valuable data will now be available to all law enforcement agencies, allowing for accurate analysis of explosion patterns, modus operandi, circuit designs, and types of explosives used. The platform will also help establish inter-linkages between incidents and generate actionable insights.

Amit Shah described NIDMS as a secure national digital platform that will standardise, integrate, and enable safe sharing of IED-related data. He said it would act as a single-click access window for information currently scattered across multiple case files, significantly enhancing investigation speed and quality.

Highlighting the concept of ‘One Nation, One Data Repository’, Shah said the system would transform dispersed departmental data into a national asset accessible to every police unit. This, he added, would improve coordination among agencies, facilitate scientific and evidence-based prosecution, and ensure that the right information reaches the right agency at the right time.

Praising the NSG, the Home Minister said it remains a strong pillar of India’s internal security. He lauded the force for its professionalism, zero-error approach, and consistent excellence in counter-terrorism operations, anti-hijacking missions, and bomb disposal activities. He noted that NSG personnel have been honoured with numerous gallantry awards, including three Ashok Chakras, two Kirti Chakras, three Shaurya Chakras, 10 Police Medals, and 44 Sena Medals.

Shah said that since its establishment in 1984, the NSG has continuously evolved in response to changing security challenges. He highlighted the expansion of NSG regional hubs across Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, and the upcoming hub in Ayodhya, which will significantly reduce response time. Once operational, the Ayodhya hub will enable the NSG to reach any part of the country within one to one-and-a-half hours during emergencies.

The Home Minister also noted that nearly 100 per cent of India’s police stations—around 17,741—are now connected to the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS). He said NIDMS will integrate with emerging platforms like ICJS-2, e-Prisons, e-Prosecution, e-Forensics, and NAFIS, further strengthening the national security grid through AI-driven data integration.

He concluded by saying that NIDMS would significantly enhance India’s ability to prevent, investigate, and respond to terrorist threats, reinforcing the country’s internal security architecture.(KINS)
