Kashmir is at a critical juncture. Changing lifestyles have created new, unsettling normals, and one of the most pressing challenges is the impact on the environment.

People cannot remain passive as their ecosystem face mounting pressures.

Every member of the community now has a responsibility toward the environment, and actions that harm it can no longer be ignored.

Even small lapses in ecological responsibility have collective consequences, affecting everyone in the valley.

A recent debate highlighted why environmental enforcement in Kashmir has often struggled. In earlier times, water patrols monitored littering and pollution, ensuring that violations had consequences.

Reintroducing such enforcement would deter behaviour that slowly erodes the valley’s natural beauty and health.

The ongoing winter tourism underscores what’s at stake. Visitors are arriving in Kashmir’s snowbound landscapes, capturing picture-perfect moments.

But beneath this pristine white, meadows, riverbanks, and peaks bear the marks of plastic and polythene. This pollution threatens both the environment and the industries that rely on its natural charm.

Focusing only on individual vendors or raiding shops will not solve the problem. A broader approach is needed, one that holds producers, distributors, and the entire plastic supply chain accountable.

Policies may be unpopular, but they must prioritize the valley’s long-term ecological and economic well-being.

The cultural shift brought by plastics is already evident in everyday life in Kashmir. Traditional utensils like copper pots once supported health, held value, and even served as trade commodities.

Modern plastic items offer none of these benefits, giving scant support to a community caught in life’s unpredictable currents.

Conscious choices in daily life can bring balance back, protecting both our health and the environment that sustains us.
